Heath is the Chief Executive of the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association and has worked in the player association network for over 20 years. Drawing on the insights gained whilst working in this environment Heath talks about the importance of creating coaching and training environments that foster and encourage young athletes to strive to achieve a balanced lifestyle, whilst pursuing their sporting dreams. One issue that has emerged in this space is retiring players who struggle with their transition into a successful life post sport. Heath suggests key factors that support an athlete’s successful transition into life post-sport include a balanced life-style and a secure sense of identity. These factors are not only important for retiring players but also for athletes who wish to succeed in high performance situations. Heath discusses the role self-determination theory can play in assisting coaches to understand how to support athlete wellbeing and create an environment that promotes sporting success.
